Laser Skin Treatment
FAQ – Laser Skin Treatment
How does the laser work?
The lasers emit a beam of light that is absorbed by melanin (pigment) in the skin and blood in the vessel. This will either break down the melanin or collapse the blood vessel, getting rid of pigmented lesions (age spots, sun spots, seborrheic keratoses, freckles, dermatosis papulosis nigra) and vascular lesions ( facial spider veins, cherry angiomas, spider angiomas, broken capillaries, rosacea).
What is a pigmented lesion?
Melanin is the dark pigment in the skin and is produced by melanocytes (cells). Pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. When dark pigment multiplies it forms freckles, brown age spots and other pigmented lesions.
What is a vascular lesion?
A vascular lesion is formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin or result in a red appearance of the skin. Spider veins (telangiectasia) are the most common lesions. Most people feel that these dilated vessels or capillaries detract from their appearance.
What should patients expect?
Treatment may vary, depending upon patient characteristics and the area being treated. Eyewear is placed to protect the eyes. A hand piece is used to direct the laser beam to the specific area. There can be some redness which usually goes away in two to three hours and edema, if any, may last one to two days. Final treatment results should be evident within 20-30 days for vascular lesions and 10-21 days for pigmented lesions. Results for acne vary. Sunscreen must be worn after the treatment.
What conditions are treated with the laser?
Telangiectasias – commonly known as facial spider veins or broken blood vessels or capillaries.
Cherry angiomas – slightly raised red spots
Rosacea – red facial lesions around the nose and cheek causing a sunburned look
Lentigenes – flat, brown spot on the skin also called age spots or sun spots
Keratoses – slightly raised brown spots often found on the back and hands but also on the face
Freckles- a brownish spot on the skin common on people with fair skin
Dermatosis papulosis nigra – small, black marks seen primarily on people of Asian descent
Who performs the procedure?
Medical Director of Reflections Medi Aesthetics Clinic, Dr. Suresh Mahtani or one of our Medical staff Doctors, perform all laser skin treatments to ensure quality of care
How many treatments are required?
Some lesions and cases of acne go away after one treatment but for optimal cosmetic results, three to four sessions may be required. This is particularly true for Rosacea and continuing sun damage, which may require maintenance sessions once a year.
MedLite C6 Laser
Although there are many types of lasers available in the marketplace today, the MedLite C6 Laser is used at Reflection Medi Aesthetics because of its efficiency and effectiveness on specific conditions. The MedLite is one of the most advanced lasers available for removal of tattoos, areas of pigment such as age spots, and specific birthmarks. It delivers short, rapid, high intensity pulses of light with maximum capability for destruction of melanin targets. The combination of the short wavelength and rapid light pulses results in maximum removal of pigmented areas while preserving surrounding skin.
What is the MedLite C6 Laser?
A world-renowned and trusted laser system, the MedLite C6 sets the gold-standard in treating epidermal and dermal pigmented lesions. The MedLite C6 is perfect for treating a wide variety of skin blemishes and common pigmentation disorders. These include: Solar lentigenes (age spots), cafe-au-lait lesions, and dermal melanocytosis (Naevus of Ota, aberrant Mongolian Spot). It can also help with concerns of Acne Scarring and Tattoo Removal. Many lesions are safely and quickly removed within 1 to 2 treatment sessions.
What can this laser do?
Treatment for Pigmented Lesions
As time goes on, almost everyone experiences the appearance of brown spots on the skin such as freckles and age spots, most commonly noted on the hands, neckline, and face. These spots are called pigmented lesions and can now be dramatically reduced or completely erased. The MedLite C6 Laser is one technologically advanced method of treating this condition. The specialized light produced by this laser is absorbed by the pigment, destroying it, and resulting in lightening or completely eliminating the spots. In most cases, only one to two treatments are required for optimal results.
Treatment for Severe Acne
Studies have shown that it can effectively reduce and eliminate severe acne. Treatment for acne targets a compound called porphyrin produced by the P.acnes bacteria (the bacteria related to acne). The laser targets porphyrin, leading to the formation of free radicals which ultimately eliminate the P.acnes bacteria.
Studies, featuring follow up assessments at three months, have shown that laser skin treatment expedites the healing of existing acne lesions as well as reduces the frequency and severity of new breakouts. Two treatments per week are recommended, totaling approximately 5 to achieve desirable results. Thereafter, treatments are performed on an as-needed basis.
MedLite C6 Laser treatments can produce improvements in skin with mild to moderate scarring from acne by stimulating collagen production, the support structure of the skin. At reflections Medi Aesthetics, MedLite procedures will be used in combination with other technologies such as Therapeutic Peels or Microdermabrasion and Medi Facials treatments to effectively treat this condition. Multiple treatments would most likely be needed in order to create improvement of the affected areas.
For those who may have changed their minds about the symbolism or content of a tattoo, the MedLite C6 Laser is the gold standard of tattoo removal without scarring. The light energy emitted from this laser passes into the skin and is absorbed by the ink of the tattoo, causing the tattoo ink to break into tiny particles which are removed by the body’s natural filtering system. There are various types of tattoos including professional, amateur, and surgical tattoos. In addition, a great variety of inks may be used in a range of colors. All ink colors can be removed in most cases, with the exception of green and yellow, which in many cases are difficult to erase completely. Multiple treatments are normally needed to remove most tattoos depending on the amount, type and color of ink used and the depth of the ink in the skin. In many cases, a 95% fading of the tattoo can be accomplished.

What can I expect?
The process starts with a consultation, which is free of charge. The Doctors at Reflections Medi Aesthetics will be able to give you an estimate of the number of treatments which will be necessary to fade or remove the area of concern. The area under treatment is shaved, cooled with ice packs and a topical anesthetic gel is applied.
Energy from the MedLite laser is very well absorbed by cells containing excessive concentrations of pigment – and not well absorbed by normal tissue – so the MedLite stimulates your body to eliminate the unwanted excessive pigment while having little or no effect on other tissues or on normal skin color.
If the area to be treated has a fresh sun tan or has been treated with self-tanning lotion, it is best to wait a couple of weeks for the tan to fade before having treatment, because the tan will absorb and waste some of the laser energy intended for the pigmented lesion. A fresh sun tan could also absorb enough laser energy to increase the risk of skin irritation or blistering.
If you take alcohol or vitamin E during the week before your pigmented lesions are treated with the MedLite laser there might be a bit more bruising in the treated area.
Most people find that MedLite laser of pigmented blemishes is not particularly painful – each pulse of laser light is similar to the snap of a thin rubber band, or tiny specks of hot bacon grease on the skin. There may be less discomfort if a second treatment is needed, because as the freckles and age spots fade there is less pigment to absorb laser energy.
Most patients do not require anesthesia, but ice packs, anesthetic creams or local anesthetic are used if necessary. If there is a large or sensitive area to be treated, painkiller medication can be taken to manage your pain threshold before laser treatment. No other special preparation is needed. The high power of the MedLite C6 allows large diameter, deeply penetrating laser beams to be used, and will help to speed up the resolution of your pigmented lesions.
Treatment sessions may last 15-45 minutes. After each session, cool compresses and a soothing gel is applied to the area. A pink or reddish painless discoloration of treated areas is to be expected, usually lasting several hours. You may be asked to avoid sun exposure for a short time afterward, depending upon the area treated and also to apply post treatment medi-skincare products. Specific instructions will be provided at the time of treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
About 60%-80% of common freckles and age spots are ligther after one treatment. Some need a second treatment, and a few need to be treated more than twice. Some blemishes do not disappear completely, but will be significantly lighter in color after treatment.
How well your lesions respond depends on several factors. Superficial lesions such as freckles and age spots tend to respond more quickly as compared to deeper, more complex lesions such as the Nevus of Ota . A more precise estimate of treatment duration will be available at the time of your initial consultation.
